The Master is a vampire old enough that he's outlived the curse of human features, he is incredibly powerful and would have been walking the earth and bringing terror to it's inhabitants still, if it weren't for the Sunnydale Earthquake of 1937. However, he was able to escape his fallen church in 1997, 60 years later thanks to the blood of Buffy Summers, the slayer who changed the entire line.

She fought long and noble, being only 16. Then she distracted him by uttering my favorite line of the entire 7 season series, "You have fruit punch mouth." And in that moment, I became a Buffy Fan for life.
